Handmade Kitchens: A Furniture-Maker’s Approach to the Heart of the Home
At Storm Furniture, bespoke furniture and specialist joinery have always been at the heart of what we do. Bringing that same approach into handmade kitchens feels like a natural progression — creating cabinetry that is designed for the individual room, made with care and finished with the attention to detail we would give to a standalone piece of furniture.
Rather than beginning with a catalogue of standard units, we can start with the space, the architecture of the home and how the kitchen needs to work for the people who use it.

Bespoke kitchen design can combine practical cabinetry with the detailing and proportions more often associated with individually made furniture.
More Than Kitchen Cabinets
A handmade kitchen gives us the opportunity to look at the room as a whole. Cabinet proportions, islands, tall cupboards, pantry storage and individual furniture pieces can all be developed to work together, rather than being dictated by a predetermined range of sizes.
This also opens up opportunities for details that can give a kitchen its own identity — from traditional framed cabinetry to contemporary designs, curved elements, reeded surfaces, natural timber and carefully considered feature pieces.

These details don’t necessarily need to dominate the room. Sometimes it is the smaller changes in proportion, material or construction that make a bespoke kitchen feel noticeably different.
Designed Inside as Well as Out
The benefit of making cabinetry specifically for a project continues behind the doors and inside the drawers.
Storage can be considered around how the kitchen will actually be used, with drawer divisions, internal fittings and cupboard arrangements designed to make everyday items easy to organise and access.

It is this combination of appearance and practicality that we think makes a well-designed kitchen successful. It should look considered, but it also needs to work effortlessly as part of everyday life.
Materials, Colour and Character
One of the most enjoyable aspects of designing a kitchen from scratch is the freedom to explore materials and finishes.
Painted cabinetry can sit alongside natural timber and veneers, while contrasting materials can be introduced to islands, feature cupboards or individual pieces. For something particularly distinctive, our furniture-making background also allows us to incorporate techniques such as marquetry and decorative veneer work.

Colour can be developed around the wider interior rather than selected in isolation, helping the kitchen feel naturally connected to the rest of the home.
Made and Finished in Our Workshop
Much of the character of a handmade kitchen comes from the way it is made and finished.
Our cabinetry is produced using the same furniture-making principles that we apply throughout our bespoke work, with attention given to construction, proportion and the smaller details that can easily be overlooked in mass-produced cabinetry.
We also have our own professional spray-finishing facilities at our Beccles workshop, giving us greater control over the preparation and finish of painted components.

Keeping these skills together allows the design, manufacture and finish to be considered as parts of the same process.
A Kitchen Made for the Home
Every house presents something different. There may be an awkward corner, an unusual wall, a particular architectural feature or simply an opportunity to use the available space more intelligently.
Working without the restriction of standard cabinet dimensions means these things can become part of the design rather than something that has to be worked around.
Ultimately, our aim is to create a kitchen that feels as though it belongs to the house — practical for everyday life, individual to its owners and made with the same care as a piece of bespoke furniture.
