At Storm Furniture, we work with designers, brands and creative agencies to turn concepts, drawings and visual renders into beautifully made, finished products.

A project can begin with anything from a detailed manufacturing drawing to a 3D render or simply a strong design concept. From there, we can develop the practical details required to turn the idea into a physical product, combining traditional cabinetmaking skills with modern manufacturing techniques and carefully selected materials.

The whisky advent calendar shown here is a good example of that process — taking an ambitious visual concept and translating it into a highly detailed, functional piece of bespoke manufacture.

 

Working From Drawings, Renders and Concepts

Not every project arrives with a complete set of production-ready drawings. We are happy to work from technical drawings, CAD information, visual renders or design concepts supplied by the client.

Where necessary, we can help develop the construction and detailing so that the finished product remains faithful to the original design while also being practical to manufacture.

This collaborative approach is particularly useful for designers and brands that have a strong visual concept but need an experienced maker to determine how it can best be constructed.

Turning a Visual Concept Into a Physical Product

A render can show exactly how a product should look, but it doesn’t necessarily show how it should be made.

This is where the manufacturing process becomes particularly important. Details such as material thicknesses, internal construction, drawer mechanisms, hinges, tolerances and the sequence of assembly all need to be considered.

For this project, the aim was to reproduce the character and proportions of the original design while creating something that felt substantial, precise and appropriately finished for a luxury product.

Bespoke Marquetry and Specialist Materials

Marquetry allows us to introduce detail, pattern and individuality that would be difficult to achieve with conventional furniture manufacturing.

Depending on the project, we can work with a wide variety of natural veneers, timbers and contrasting materials to develop decorative surfaces specifically for the product or brand.

The marquetry itself also has to be considered as part of the construction. Veneer selection, grain direction, pattern alignment and the way designs continue across doors, drawers or adjoining panels can all have a significant effect on the finished piece.

Details That Make a Luxury Product

The quality of a bespoke product is often most noticeable in the details.

For projects such as this, we can incorporate features including precision-made dovetail drawers, discreet push-to-open catches, carefully selected high-quality hinges and bespoke internal layouts.

Hardware and mechanisms are selected to suit the individual project rather than forcing the design around a predetermined construction method.

This means the outside of the product can remain clean and visually refined while the internal construction provides the strength, accuracy and functionality required.

From Prototype to Small-Batch Production

Some projects begin as a single prototype, while others are intended for a limited production run.

Producing the first piece gives us the opportunity to refine construction methods, establish jigs and processes, resolve tolerances and identify opportunities to make subsequent pieces more efficient without compromising quality.

For brands, this provides a route from an initial concept through development and prototyping to repeatable UK manufacture.

 

Bespoke UK Manufacturing

Our workshop in Beccles, Suffolk combines cabinetmaking, veneering, marquetry, specialist joinery and finishing capabilities, allowing us to undertake unusual projects that don’t necessarily fit conventional furniture manufacturing.

We particularly enjoy projects where the answer isn’t immediately obvious — where a designer has created something distinctive and needs a manufacturer capable of working out how to make it.
